Power Steering Filter
Fits my 2000 Passat just fine,
This filter is machined from a block of aluminum. Inside is a wire mesh basket which rides on a spring. Atop this is a magnet shaped like a flat donut. Apparently the spring allows the basket to move if the filter becomes clogged so that it does not block the stream of fluid. So it’s a bypass valve. I purchased the 3/8-inch size.
I installed the filter in the return line that goes to the reservoir. Don’t put it on the high pressure side! Both the incoming and outgoing hoses on the reservoir are low pressure so it’s your pick. Just be sure to orient the filter to the flow direction correctly or the bypass will not work.
The filter is relatively easy to open. Just pry out the circlip and pull the halves apart. The manufacturer suggests looking at the filter screen every 30000 miles. This is not a problem for me as that is a good interval to flush my ps fluid anyway.
There is a dim and tiny label stuck on the filter to show the direction fluid should take through it. It is so poorly done and hard to read. When it got a bit of PS fluid on it, it was practically unreadable. I’m pretty sure this sad little label will just fall off in few thousand miles. My solution is to just scratch a big arrow on the body of the filter pointing toward the circlip. That’s the flow direction. You can see this label in Amazon’s picture of the product. It is so peculiar that they chose to make the tiny flow arrow point opposite the reading direction of the “FLOW” legend. You have to do a lot of gyrations in visualizing which way to install this filter whenever you see this label.
The filter is strong and well made and should certainly last the remaining life of my car. The filter is cleanable, so that’s a plus. Except for the awful label I do recommend this filter as a reasonable investment to perhaps extending the life of a steering rack.
